The Celebrity History of National Life Insurance Awareness Month

Written by Jason Fisher

September is National Life Insurance Awareness Month, and it’s the tenth year consecutive this time around. Americans either have not enough life insurance, or none at all, and the LIFE Foundation is making it’s biggest effort yet to spread the word to the masses about the importance of having it.

Over the past decade, the face of the campaign has changed every year, and a different spokesperson has been selected each time. Each spokesperson has had a story to tell, and this year’s is no different.

But you may be surprised who the spokespersons are. Below is the list:

Most of you know Boomer Esiason, former NFL quarterback, but may not know him as a life insurance spokesperson. For 2013, he has teamed up with the LIFE Foundation for it’s 10th annual Life Insurance Awareness Month campaign.

Lamar Odom, NBA basketball star and popular on E!’s Chloe & Lamar, has a story quite opposite of Boomer some of the other’s featured as spokespersons, because life insurance changed his life for the good. 2010 – Leslie Bibb

Leslie Bibb was another one, like Lamar, to have been fortunate life insurance was in place when it was needed most. You might recognize her memorable smile from movies like “Iron Man 2” or “Talledega Nights.” Although she was merely a toddler when her father was killed in an accident, her mother was taken care of from a policy he had purchased on himself for just this reason: expecting the unexpected.

2009 – Chris Noth

You know this spokesperson as Mr. Big on “Sex and the City” and Detective Logan on “Law and Order” and his story is perhaps the most closely tied to life insurance directly. His father, who passed prematurely, was a life insurance agent himself. Thankfully, he believed enough in the product he was selling to own it himself. This gave Chris Noth and his mother, Jeanne, the security to continue the lifestyle they had, and to continue the pursuit of their dreams without the financial difficulty of not having insurance in place.

2006 – Scott Hamilton

Scott Hamilton has a very unique story as well. The renowned figure skater and Olympic Gold medalist not only saw the need for life insurance for his mother, who passed away from cancer, but saw the necessity in his own life as well. He, too, was diagnosed with cancer, yet was fortunate enough to live to talk about it. Now, with a wife and two kids, a trying time like this is sure to stir discussion about life insurance and it’s place in the common household.

But, if cancer wasn’t enough to test Scott, a brain tumor surely was. But yet again, he was able to fight it off. Do you think Scott sees the value in life insurance?
